About This Tool
What This Tool Does
Pixelates an entire image or a selected region, perfect for hiding faces, license plates, screen contents, or any sensitive information before sharing. The pixelation block size is adjustable.
Two Modes
- Whole image - applies pixelation to the entire image (useful for stylized avatars or 8-bit effects)
- Selected area - drag a rectangle on the image; only that region is pixelated
Privacy Note
Use a pixel size of at least 16-24 pixels for genuine privacy. Smaller pixels can sometimes be reconstructed by AI super-resolution models. For maximum privacy, use a solid black rectangle (with the cropper tool) instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big should the block size be for privacy?
16-24 pixels is generally enough to obscure faces and small text. For more sensitive content (license plates, screen contents with personal info) use 30+ pixels. The bigger the blocks, the harder it is to recover the original.
Can pixelation be reversed?
Generally no - pixelation discards information that cannot be recovered exactly. However, recent AI super-resolution models can sometimes reconstruct plausible faces from heavily pixelated photos. For absolute privacy, use a solid black box instead of pixelation.
Why does the selected-area mode require dragging?
The selected-area mode pixelates only the rectangle you draw. After uploading, switch to that mode and click+drag on the image to define the region. The whole-image mode applies pixelation to everything.
